Why Reading the Newspaper Isn't Enough for CLAT 2027 Current Affairs?

by CL Educate Ltd on Jul 22, 2026
CLAT 2027

Current Affairs is one of the most dynamic and scoring sections of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Every year thousands of aspirants begin their preparation for it by reading newspapers like The Hindu or The Indian Express thinking that being updated with the news is enough to ace the exam.

While reading the newspaper is a must, it is only the starting point and not the complete strategy. CLAT does not reward students for reading news. It rewards students who can understand, remember, revise and apply the current affairs in an exam oriented manner.

If your current affairs preparation is just reading the newspaper everyday, then you might be missing out on valuable marks. And here's why.

What CLAT Actually Tests ?

One of the biggest misconceptions among CLAT aspirants is that Current Affairs is all about memorising news headlines. But in reality, the CLAT exam  tests you  much more than that.

The Current Affairs section in CLAT is passage-based. You will read passages drawn from recent news or current events and answer questions that test your understanding of the passage, along with your awareness of the events, people, organisations, and issues related to it. The passages can be based on topics such as:

  • National and International Events

  • Landmark Legal Judgments and Constitutional Developments

  • Government Policies and Schemes

  • Economy and Business

  • Science & Technology

  • Environment and Climate Change

  • Awards and Honours

  • Sports

  • International Organisations and Global Affairs and many more

To answer the question correctly , you need to understand the story behind the headlines, connect it with relevant facts, and regularly revise important events.

Newspapers Give Information, Not Exam Preparation

Newspapers keep you updated but CLAT tests your understanding . Reading the newspaper every day is a great habit, but being informed isn't the same as being exam-ready.

Newspapers tell you what happened, while CLAT tests how well you understand the event and the background of it. For example, you might read about a recent Supreme Court judgment in the newspaper. In the exam, however, you could be expected to know:

  • The constitutional article or legal concept related to the judgment

  • Why the case was important

  • The people or institutions involved

  • The broader issue or principle highlighted by the case

To score well you need to understand the background, connect related facts, and regularly revise important events. A newspaper reports the news. CLAT expects you to connect the dots.

Read Smart, Revise Smarter

Reading the newspaper every day is important, but reading everything isn't the smartest strategy for CLAT. Newspapers cover a wide range of topics, many of which have little relevance to the exam.

Instead, focus on exam-oriented topics such as:

  • Supreme Court and High Court judgments

  • Government schemes and policies

  • International summits and global affairs

  • Constitutional developments

  • Reports, rankings, and indices

  • Major appointments

  • Awards and honours

  • Economy and business

  • Science & Technology

  • Environment and climate

Just as important as what you read is how well you remember it. Current affairs is a long-term game, and without regular revision, it's easy to forget important events.

A simple routine can make all the difference:

  • Read relevant news daily.

  • Make short, easy-to-revise notes.

  • Revise weekly and monthly.

  • Practice MCQs to test your recall and identify weak areas.

The goal isn't to read more news, it's to retain the right information and apply it confidently in the exam.

Current Affairs and Static GK Go Hand in Hand

Many CLAT aspirants treat Current Affairs and Static GK as two separate subjects but they are closely connected.

When you read about a major news event, understanding the background makes it much easier to answer exam questions. For example, if there's news about UNESCO, you should also know its headquarters, purpose, and member countries.

That's why your preparation shouldn't stop at reading the news. Spend a little time exploring the facts and concepts behind important events.A strong foundation in Static GK not only improves your understanding of current affairs but also helps you recall information more effectively during the exam.

Practice, Revise, and Test Yourself

A well-planned strategy and practice can make your current affairs preparation more effective. Instead of relying only on newspapers, follow these simple steps:

1. Read One Reliable Newspaper

Choose a trusted newspaper like The Hindu or The Indian Express and focus on exam-relevant news. Sticking to one source helps you avoid information overload.

2. Make Short, Easy-to-Revise Notes

After reading, note down the key points, including:

  • What happened

  • Why it is important

  • Related organisations or personalities

  • Key facts and figures

  • Relevant Static GK connections

3. Revise Regularly

Set aside time every week to revise your notes. Consistent revision helps improve retention and ensures you don't forget important events before the exam.

4. Practice Questions Consistently

Solve topic-wise MCQs and Previous Year Questions (PYQs) to strengthen your understanding, improve recall, and become familiar with the CLAT question pattern.

5. Attempt Full-Length Mock Tests

Take mock tests regularly to improve time management, reading speed, and accuracy. They also help you identify weak areas so you can revise them before the exam.

Following this simple routine consistently will help you stay organised, retain information better, and approach the Current Affairs section with confidence.
