IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Paper 2026: How to Write an Essay and a Comprehension Answer That Score Full Marks in 30 Minutes?

IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Paper 2026: How to Write an Essay and a Comprehension Answer That Score Full Marks in 30 Minutes?

Are you still trying to get the hang of letter writing for the IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Paper 2026? Pause. Under the current CRP PO MT XVI pattern, letter writing has been completely dropped from the Descriptive Paper. It is now replaced with one essay and one comprehension-based question, 25 marks in total, squeezed into 30 minutes, with Mains a few weeks ahead on October 4.

This is a significant change, and it matters more than it sounds. At some point, letter writing rewarded format and tone, but comprehension gets you closer to what the essay already tests: quick reading ability, pulling out relevant information, and original writing without wasting a single line. So, if your study material still focuses too much on letter writing, you need to reconsider it since it was built for a version of the exam which no longer exists.

While you prepare for the paper, remember that it is typed, not handwritten, and you answer it immediately after the objective Mains test in one go. In the present notification, responses may run through an automated scoring layer that checks content relevance, organisation, grammar, and adherence to the prescribed word limit. This is for those who don't write cleverly but follow a predictable structure, executed in under fifteen minutes under pressure.

How to Structure the Essay for Full Marks?

The IBPS PO essay writing format 2026 starts with structure, not creativity. Divide the essay into five parts and stop devising a new one every time you sit for a mock. Start with a short prologue that explains what the topic means and why it matters today. Three body paragraphs, built around one clear point and finally a conclusion offering a way forward, not a summary of what you already wrote.

Aim for around 250 words if the question does not give you an exact number, and do not let that drift toward 400. Knowing the IBPS PO descriptive paper word limit before exam day matters more than most aspirants think, since going over it by more than 15 to 20 per cent typically costs marks rather than earning credit for effort. A tight 250-word essay with three clear points beats a rambling 380-word essay covering six half-finished ones. Topics worth practising before October 4 include digital banking, financial inclusion, AI in banking, cybersecurity, green finance, and the broader Indian economy, since these have shown up repeatedly across recent cycles.

Take AI in banking, for example. One clear point is not “AI is changing banking.” That is a title, not an argument. A real point looks like this: AI-driven fraud detection now flags suspicious transactions in real time instead of after the fact; that cuts financial loss and rebuilds customer trust at the same time. State it, explain it in two sentences, and move to the next point. Three of those, planned before you type, will always beat a paragraph that starts strong and wanders by the third line.

How to Answer the Comprehension Question Without Wasting Time?

If you are working out how to answer IBPS PO Mains comprehension questions without burning your remaining minutes, start by reading the question before the passage, not after. Comprehension in this format is not a reading test the way school exams treat it. You are given a passage and asked to answer based only on what is written there, not your own opinion or outside knowledge, and the fastest route to full marks is lifting the core idea straight from the passage and rephrasing it in one or two clean sentences.

Reading the question first changes how you read the passage, since you are now scanning for one specific answer instead of absorbing everything and hoping the relevant part sticks later. Answer only what was asked. An accurate two-line answer scores higher than an accurate paragraph, because the extra lines add nothing the automated system is checking for and only raise your risk of a grammar slip.

With thirty minutes for both, a workable split is eighteen minutes for the essay and twelve for comprehension, since the essay needs planning time that the comprehension answer does not. Spend the first minute of the essay outlining three points on scratch space before typing a single sentence. It feels slow in the moment and saves far more time than it costs, because a planned essay rarely needs mid-way editing.

FAQs

Is letter writing still part of the IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Paper 2026?

No. Under the current CRP PO MT XVI pattern, letter writing has been removed. The paper now consists of one essay and one comprehension-based question, 25 marks combined, 30 minutes combined.

What is the word limit for the IBPS PO 2026 essay?

Around 250 words is a safe target unless the question on screen gives you a different number. Always follow the exact limit shown in the actual question over any generic figure quoted online, including this one.

How is the IBPS PO descriptive paper evaluated?

Through an automated scoring layer that checks the relevance of content, how clearly the answer is organised, grammar, and how closely you stuck to the prescribed word limit. Structure and precision matter more here than vocabulary or creative writing.
